The Best of 2016

2016 was a great year for the Vernon ATV Club. There were a large number of rides through all seasons and we saw a number of new riders, young families and many of the old regulars.

In the community the club held it’s third cleanup on King Eddy Road, removing 5 truckloads of garbage totalling 2,900lbs. We continued our annual donations to local charities with $750 cash donated to three local charities plus another $400 and 105lbs food bank donation by those attending the club Christmas party. We attended the Canada Day celebrations in Polson Park with machines and information for all the families in attendance. Club volunteers gave over 1,000 hours of their time to club functions in 2016.

We held rides with the Kelowna ATV Club and the Salmon Arm Natures Nomads ATV Club and explored many areas outside our regular stomping grounds of Noble Canyon and King Eddy Road. We had riders join us from as far away as Prince George and New Brunswick.

There’s much more to come in 2017, the club directors are busy working behind the scenes to make the new year bigger and better.

It’s a real pleasure to be part of a group of people who enjoy responsibly using the great resource that this province provides us and who contribute so much to each other and the community!

ATV club uncovers rural dump sites in Coldstream

A section of the bush is a little cleaner thanks to some dedicated volunteers.

Members of the Vernon ATV Club recently tackled garbage along the King Edward Forest Road, from Highway 6 to the King Edward Lake, Bear Lake and Kaiser Bill Lake recreation sites.

“It’s disappointing and surprising the lengths people will drive into the bush to dump,” said Clint Ingham, club president

The amount of trash collected weighed 2,800 pounds and filled five trucks.

Items included mattresses, TVs, household waste, construction material, furniture, exercise machines, bottles, cans, a burned travel trailer and hundreds of shotgun shells.

There is a concern that household waste could attract wildlife, while metal and other sharp pieces could pose a risk to recreational users and livestock.

“A cow could get cut up on it,” said Ingham, adding there is no need for illegal dumping.

“When I go to the landfill, I always find it affordable.”

Anyone who comes across illegal dumping can call the Report all Poachers and Polluters hotline at 1-877-952-7277 or #7277 on the Telus network.

3 Valley Gap GPS Ride Report

I left Vernon July 9, 2016 for my first GPS ride and was pumped with excitement, even with the rain pouring down in buckets.

Arrived at 3 Valley Gaps event site at 8am, looked like a well-organized setup, including a pancake breakfast. Stuffed my face and chatted with the many participants. Bought 3 sets of tickets, 12 in total, and roared off into the great unknown, hoping I could find them all, or at least find my way back if I couldn’t, before my food or gas ran out.

Still pouring buckets, but no dust, found the first GPS coordinate, and realized what I was looking for, entered the next one, and off again. Stunning scenery along the way, and with the rain, I felt like a pirate looking for buried treasure as I searched out the next spot.

Found all but one GPS plaque (it was missing – honest) and returned to the camp site around 4:30pm, Entered my results, changed into dry clothing, loaded up and headed back to Vernon.

Great event, great people, great fun – I highly recommend it! Even the rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of adventure and satisfaction of finding all the hidden GPS locations.

Steve’s Spa Spin Summary

8 units showed up for the ride for a total of 10 people and a dog.

The ride started off with Mark taking the lead because he knew of a great trail to reach the power lines. It was great and twisty, steep, and rocky, we loved it!

Mark continued to lead on the power line trails, then we took a side trip and looked down on Falkland from the mountain tops. After enjoying the view we headed off to Spanish Lake, met some campers and shared their camp fire for lunch.

After everyone enjoyed their lunch break Steve took the lead up the road to Spa Lake which had lots of switchbacks to drift around leaving everyone pumped up at the top.

From Spa we went back to Arthur Lake, and I followed the GPS and hoped it was going to take us out somewhere close to the Staging Area. Great trail and made it back eventually, the best kind of ride – exploring the unknown trails!

Will do again to find a different route to Spa and back now that we’ve mapped some of the trails.

King Eddy Road Cleanup

Twelve members of the Vernon ATV Club rounded up 1260kg of garbage that took 3 trucks and 2 trailers to transport to the dump. We also retrieved a burnt up trailer that had been dumped over the side of one of the switchbacks, the trailer went separately to metal recycling.

The morning started off with light rain but the day cleared up as we worked and turned out to be a pretty nice afternoon. Garbage was collected from the bottom of King Eddy Road up to 7km then we jumped to the Bear Lake and Aberdeen Lake Rec sites where we picked up a number of TVs, mattresses and random junk.

The final tally amongst the 1260kg taken to the landfill included:

  • 5 TVs
  • 11 mattresses
  • couches and chairs
  • hundreds of shotgun shells
  • lots of broken bottles and smushed cans
  • much stunky and gross stuff
  • one suspicious timbits box

Full Moon Long Weekend Campout

Join us at the sort yard on King Eddy Road for the May long weekend. Everyone is welcome, members and non-members – so if you enjoy ATV, UTVing come out to meet some like-minded folks and have fun.

The sort yard is the gate to the left of the cattleguard, watch for the yellow ATV sign pointing the way. The gate opens at 3:00pm on Friday afternoon for campers to arrive and start setting up then hang out around the campfire in the evening.

Saturday morning is when the fun starts with a cleanup along King Eddy Road. Bring your ATV, UTV or truck as we head up the road gathering all the stuff people have discarded. We’ll need a couple of trucks for transporting the garbage to the landfill. If we get done before evening we may squeak a ride in.

Saturday afternoon there is a BBQ, it’s free for cleanup volunteers and $5 per person for everyone else. You’ll find burgers, chips & dip, salad, veggies and drinks. The BBQ will be followed by a meeting to catch everyone up on club activities.

Sunday morning is ride time, join us as we head up onto the Aberdeen plateau for some riding.

Crispy Crunchy Ride Recap

What a day for a ride with Vernon socked in its mid-winter grey coat. We quickly climbed above the clouds and were treated to bright blue skies and a seascape of clouds covering the city below.

Both wheeled and tracked machines along for the ride. Some people took the opportunity to try a tracked quad for the first time and bad luck for Verne he got sucked off the side of the road and down into the deep snow in the ditch. When tracked quads get stuck they’re really stuck and no amount of pushing, pulling, winching or advice was breaking it free until the shovels came out to dig the Grizzly free.

Great ride crew, stay tuned for details of our next ride on the February 6/7 weekend!
